Newly-opened Patsy Cline Historic House already a pilgrimage for fans

Joe Richards says that he enjoys the challenge of guiding groups of knowledgeable visitors through the Patsy Cline Historic House, which first opened it's doors to the public on Aug. 2 in Winchester, Va. “Almost everyone that comes here is a die-hard Patsy fan,” he says. “And a lot of them know a great deal about Patsy Cline. And they've heard all the records, they read all the books, and they love to find answers to questions.” The house has been restored to look like it did when Patsy Cline lived there as a young girl. Since it opened, it has already attracted visitors from other states and foreign countries.

Patsy Cline Home Opening for Tours

The Winchester, Va., home where Patsy Cline lived before becoming a country star will open for public tours starting Tuesday (Aug. 2). Cline lived with her mother and two siblings at the house at 608 S. Kent St. from November 1948, following her parents' separation, through June 1957, except for a period during her first marriage. The modest home was purchased by a local nonprofit organization, Celebrating Patsy Cline Inc., which spent about $100,000 on renovations. Cline sang in area clubs and worked as a soda jerk in a local drugstore before finding a national audience on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts television program in 1957. That same year, she married Charlie Dick. Cline died in a plane crash at age 30 in 1963. She is buried in Winchester, Va.

Researcher ‘crazy’ about singer

BRUNSWICK -- Douglas Gomery came to Brunswick in search of Patsy Cline.
Mary Jo Brown, Margo Cannon Smith and Brunswick Mayor Carroll Jones shared memories Tuesday of the late country singer with Gomery, who is writing a book about Cline's life.

Gomery is a retired University of Maryland professor. He became interested in Patsy Cline when he realized her greatest hits album remained one of the top sellers on the Billboard music charts throughout the 1990s.

"That had to mean something," he said. Gomery, 62, is the resident scholar at the Library of American Broadcasting at the university.

WINCHESTER- Things are set to get a little crazy Saturdayin Winchester.

Celebrating Patsy Cline Inc.'s "A Crazy Affair" will remember legendary singer and Winchester native Patsy Cline on the 48th anniversary of her March 5, 1963, death in a small airplane crash. Cline was 30 years old.

"It's not going to be a solemn event," though, said JudySue Huyett-Kempf, CPC president.

Instead, "It's a celebration," she said. "It's a full evening of Patsy."

All money raised will go to the renovation of Cline's onetime home in Winchester, at 608 S. Kent St.

The house, where she intermittently lived with her family in the late 1940s and 50s is slated to open in late spring, restored to Cline's era.

The evening will begin with 6 p.m. cocktails, and food served at 7 p.m. at the Best Western Lee-Jackson Inn and Conference Center.

The band Souled Out, and its country-music spinoff, Crosswinds, will play throughout the night.

Crosswinds singer Chrissy Armel is connected to Cline, Huyett-Kempf said. Her uncle, Bud Armel played in the Kountry Krackers band, which often backed Cline in appearances throughout the region. Bud Armel died in 2000 in Winchester, at age 71.

Chrissy Armel will also sing during a 20-minute special tribute to Cline, said Tracie Dillon, chairwoman for CPC special events.

Last year was the event's first, and it was packed, with the full complement of 500 tickets sold, Huyett-Kempf said. She anticipates a similar response this year.

After the Cline remembrance, the night will also feature a live auction. Items include a one-of-a-kind quilt, made by a Cline fan, using photo images of the singer, Dillon said.

Other items up for bid are asigned poster, photo and DVD of the film "Kicking and Screaming," donated by actor Robert Duvall; a helicopter ride for three; a one-night stay at Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C.; VIP passes and parking passes to the Virginia Gold Cup, and one-night stays at the Boar's Head Inn in Charlottesville, Red Fox Inn in Middleburg, and Marriott Ranch in Hume.

Door prizes will also be given away throughout the night, Dillon said. Those will include tickets to the Loudoun County Fair, where CPC sponsors a karaoke contest, Tarara Winery in Leesburg's summer concert series, and dinner at Charles Town Races and Slots.

A Cline trivia contest will round out the evening's events, presided over by Q102-FM radio morning team Chris and Rosie.

CLINE MUSEUM FINALLY HAS A HOME -- HERS: After years of planning and fundraising..., a tribute to legendary country singer Patsy Cline will physically be present in her hometown of Winchester. The $100,000 fund-raising goal was reached this week with anonymous donors making up the final $28,000. The announcement was made this morning at the house on the anniversary of the day in 1957, when Cline won a talent contest on the Arthur Godfrey Show in New York, singing “Walkin’ After Midnight.” The house, which she occupied with her family many of the years she lived in Winchester, will be restored and opened to the public as a house museum. The anticipated opening date is late spring this year.

Patsy Cline Benefit - Premier of "Country Strong"

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Winchester, Virginia will host the local premier of the new country movie "Country Strong" starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw January 10th, 2011. The proceeds from the premier will benefit the restoration efforts of Patsy Cline's 608 South Kent Street House in Winchester, Virginia which is owned by Celebrating Patsy Cline, Inc. Once restorations are complete, the house will be opened for tour. A $20 per person ticket will get you in to the reception from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, into the movie at 7:00 PM and to be served by Q102 radio DJ's who will be working the cash bar. A portion of the bar receipts will also benefit Patsy's house. A $40 per person ticket will give you everything the $20 ticket offers - but you'll also get a meal, as well. Come on out and join us on Monday, January 10th, 2011 at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema for this fabulous benefit night and showing of "Country Strong."

Celebrating Patsy Cline, Inc. is hosting an event at Patsy's historic house at 608 South Kent Street. Stop by for a day full of activities including an old fashioned Patsy Cline walk, a look alike contest, live music, and chances to win Patsy souvenirs. Judy Sue Kempf, President of Celebrating Patsy Cline, Inc., says the idea was inspired by a fan letter Patsy replied to from a lady name Louise.

"And Patsy wrote to Louise that Winchester, VA, her hometown, was planning a huge day for her. A day of celebration. They were gonna kick up some noise for her. And she said she really wished that they wouldn't go to all that trouble but it was so wonderful that they were thinking of her in that way. Well, it never happened unfortunately. However, 40 some years later Celebrating Patsy Cline... we're gonna kick up some noise for Patsy."

Patsy Cline day is being held from 10 in the morning until 6 in the evening. All proceeds will benefit the restoration of Patsy Cline's historical house.

Sat here at the troubadour a band from new jersey will perform 9 pm till 12. Our big day will be Sunday Sept 5 its all free except drinks, just bring a covered dish, we will have 2 pigs for food. Rockabilly Exhibition In Virginia

A new exhibit is exploring the history of rockabilly music in Virginia.

The exhibit called "Virginia Rocks! The History of Rockabilly in the Commonwealth," is opening at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond from Aug. 28 through Dec. 12.

The traveling exhibit was organized by the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum of Ferrum College.

It looks at more than 60 artists and bands from all over the state who made rockabilly records in small recording studios and radio stations in the 1950s and early 1960s. It also features well-known musicians like Elvis Presley and Patsy Cline, and Virginia artists Janis Martin, Phil Gray, the Rock-A-Teens and the Dazzlers.

The exhibit was funded in part by a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities

Famed country singer-songwriter Hank Cochran passed away this morning, July 15 at his own residence in Hendersonville, Tenn. He was 74.

Earlier this year, Hank underwent emergency surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm. He also had health issues in 2008 when he was treated for pancreatic cancer.

Widely known for penning the 1961 Patsy Cline classic, 'I Fall to Pieces' with Harlan Howard, Cochran went on to write other country radio hits, specifically Eddy Arnold's 'Make the World Go Away' and George Strait's 'Ocean Front Property,' among others.

A recording artist from 1962 until 1980, his first single, 'Sally Was a Good Old Girl,' became a Top 20. A slew of his other songs became staple covers, recorded by the likes of Ray Price, Ronnie Milsap, Natalie Cole, Dean Martin, Linda Ronstadt, Reba McEntire, Lee Ann Womack and Brad Paisley. Hank even motivated his publishing company, Pamper Music, to sign the ambitious singer-songwriter Willie Nelson.

His contributions have earned him a number of prestigious accolades, including being inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Association International Hall of Fame (in 1974) and honored by BMI for his 50-plus years contributing to the music industry.

Hank was fortuitously surrounded by loving family and friends when he passed away, with Jamey Johnson, Billy Ray Cyrus and songwriter-producer Buddy Cannon even stopping by to see their friend the day before his passing. A private, family memorial is expected to be held, with a public service -- details not yet announced -- to follow.

Country Music Hall of Famer Jimmy Dean dies at 81

Country Music Hall of Famer Jimmy Dean, whose "Big Bad John" was a genre-crossing smash, died Sunday night in Virginia. He was 81.

A bold personality who founded the highly successful sausage company that bears his name, Dean helped spread country music's popularity through his recordings and through his status as a national television personality.

"I was one of the lucky people who really got to know him," said fellow Hall of Famer Bill Anderson. "Beneath that bravado, there was a wonderful human being. I've never had a better friend."

Born in Olton, Texas, in 1928, Mr. Dean served in the United States Air Force before breaking into show business. He helped Patsy Cline and Roy Clark get their starts in music, and he split time in the 1950s between television projects and recording endeavors. In 1961, he hit with the recitation "Big Bad John."

That million-selling recording wound up atop the Billboard pop charts, and it was a Grammy for Best Country & Western Recording in 1962. It also helped Mr. Dean's star ascend to the point that he sometimes hosted The Tonight Show and also starred in his own television vehicle, ABC's The Jimmy Dean Show.

Mr. Dean had another major hit with the country chart-topping "The First Thing Ev'ry Morning (And the Last Thing Ev'ry Night)," and he recorded a Top 10 country hit in the 1970s with "I.O.U."

In 1969, Mr. Dean founded the Jimmy Dean Sausage Company, which was later acquired by Consolidated Foods. In 2004, he released an autobiography, 30 Years of Sausage, 50 Years of Ham.

Mr. Dean was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year, and was slated to attend a Medallion Ceremony commemorating his official induction in October. He is survived by his wife, Donna Meade Dean.

Grand Ole Opry Moves This Week's Shows To Other Nashville Venues Due To Flooding

Nashville, TN — May 03, 2010

Due to heavy flooding in Nashville, Tenn. including the Grand Ole Opry Entertainment Complex, this week's Grand Ole Opry performances have been moved from the Grand Ole Opry House to other Nashville venues. The Tuesday Night Opry performance scheduled for May 4th will take place at the War Memorial Auditorium, 301 6th Ave. North, Nashville, Tenn. Weekend performances will move to the historic Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville. Thursday's performance of Opry Country Classics will remain at the Ryman as previously scheduled. Show times for all shows remain at 7:00 p.m. Both the War Memorial and the Ryman are former homes of the Opry.

The Opry House suffered damage as a result of the record-breaking rains and subsequent flooding in Nashville. The last time the Opry had to relocate was in 1975 to Nashville's Municipal Auditorium, just one year after the opening of the Grand Ole Opry House. That move was also caused by Cumberland River flooding.

"While we ourselves are shaken by the impact of the flooding of the Opry House and throughout the area, it is important that Nashville's most treasured tradition continues with this week's shows," said Grand Ole Opry Vice President Pete Fisher. "We look forward to coming together both as the Opry family and as a great American city just as we have every week for nearly 85 years. Our hearts go out to all of those affected in the Middle Tennessee area."

The Opry Call Center is temporarily out of service, and other operations on the Opry Entertainment Complex including Opry backstage tours and the Grand Ole Opry Museum, have been temporarily suspended. It is too early to determine how long Opry operations will be impacted at this time.

Fans, including those planning to attend this week's shows, can stay updated on everything happening in response to this week's flooding at opry.com. Photos and video will also be posted as they become available on Facebook and Twitter.

The music of country music legend Patsy Cline will live again in a world premiere production ofThe Last Concert of Patsy Cline at Showplace Peterborough on Sept. 24.

"There's been Patsy Cline shows before but this is a world premiere," said Tim Rowat, director and producer, in a telephone interview.

"I've done a few Patsy Cline shows over the years and so has my son (Graham...Guys and Dolls, Blue Pacific, Les Mizand White Christmas),"said Rowat.

"They approached me after I directedChristmas Storiesshow for the Trent Valley Archives," he said.

"It's an interesting project. It's never been performed before. It was written several years ago for the Toronto Fringe Festival but was not mounted."

It will star North Bay's Victoria Pearce. "She's a great Patsy Cline," said Rowat.

Also in the show will be his wife Gail Rowat as Loretta Lynn and Danny Bronson and his band.

The show tells the story of Cline's final concert on March 3, 1963 in Kansas City and her death two days later. It is a concert within a play, combining a live tribute performance of the last concert and storytelling by her best friend Loretta Lynn.

Cline died in a plane crash heading back to Nashville following the concert.

Cline's hits includedWalkin' After Midnight, I Fall to Pieces, She's Got You, CrazyandSweet Dreams.

She was the first female soloist to be inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame and had her photograph on a commemorative U.S. postage stamp.

I've been obsessed with music since I was a little kid. It continues to be an important part of my everyday activities. I think the first creative decision I make each workday is what music I'm going to listen to. My tastes are very eclectic though I must admit that contemporary country has never held much of an appeal for me. Generally, I find it too over-produced. But the classic stuff from the 20s through the 50s has a special place in my lexicon.

Two heroes of mine, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams, seemed a natural fit for a country pairing. Both had their heydays mid-century, dressed in classic country attire and died way too young — at thirty years-old for Cline and twenty-nine for Williams. They each left us with a great body of timeless music.

San Francisco illustrator and artist Mark Ulriksen is probably best known for his whimsical covers for The New Yorker, where he has been a regular contributor since 1993, publishing over 30 covers. He has produced work for many of America's leading magazines and newspapers, including Time, Newsweek, The Atlantic Monthly, Playboy, Rolling Stone, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. His paintings have appeared in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, and Rome. Mark's work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome. He has been profiled in industry publications such as Communication Arts, 3 x 3, Taschen's Illustration Now!, Archive's 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide, the university textbook Graphic Communication Today, and the European publications Dogs and Style Monte Carlo. Ulriksen has been a consistent presence in juried exhibitions for the past fifteen years, winning gold and silver medals from the Society of Illustrators. Mark has lectured at universities internationally and has been a featured speaker at ICON 3 and 4 Illustration Conferences.

Happy 50th Birthday, Tootsie's Orchid Lounge

If you've ever been to Nashville, you've surely visited the world famous Tootsie's Orchid Lounge on Lower Broadway. It's the epitome of a honky-tonk where country music can be heard continuously on that tiny wooden stage by the front door. It's where Kris Kristofferson's name is written on the ceiling upstairs and pictures of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Patsy Cline decorate the smoke-stained walls. It's a place where Nashville memories are made -- or forgotten -- depending on how much you've had to drink. But nonetheless, Tootsie's Orchid Lounge is a staple of Nashville and this month marks its 50th anniversary.

The late Tootsie Bess bought the bar (once known as Mom's) back in March of 1960 and renamed it Tootsie's Orchid Lounge. As the story goes, the place was painted an orchid-like purple -- hence the "Orchid" name. Ever since its opening, the bar has been an attraction for country music lovers and hopefuls. But no matter what brings a person to Tootsie's, everyone leaves with a story.

I'll never forget the first time I saw it. I was on a family trip and we watched two young women walking in. I thought, "Wow, now that looks like fun. We sure don't have that back home." My mom on the other hand, said aloud, "Where is their mother?" We still joke about that today. And as soon as I got the chance to move to Nashville, you bet that's where I went.

Members of our generation remember “where we were and what we were doing” when key events occurred: The Kennedy Assassination, The Challenger Explosion, 9/11 to name a few. For me, there’s another one that most people don’t think too much about.
In the 1950s and 1960s, only a very few country music acts earned enough money to become wealthy. Most country acts lived among the working class folks of suburbia, and many of them held other jobs to keep food on the table week after week.
Wednesday, March 6, dawned cool like most late winter days in Nashville, but there was something sad and different in the air that morning. I was only in third grade, but the memory of that morning is fresh and clear. The phone rang several times. Neighbors gathered and talked in driveways and porches before heading for work or school. A horrible tragedy had occurred the night before, and the bodies and wreckage had been discovered at daybreak. Singers Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, and manager / pilot Randy Hughes had perished on that ill-fated flight through bad weather.
I walked past the home of Cowboy Copas every morning and afternoon going to and from school. His son Mike was a few years ahead of me, in junior high. Randy Hughes’ son Larry attended my elementary school. Patsy Cline, having made the big-time, had just moved into a new home a few miles away in another neighborhood of ‘spacious’ 1800 sq ft homes. Her husband Charlie worked in the composing room at the afternoon newspaper. These folks were our neighbors. Part of our community. Tragedy struck, history was written, we grieved.
Those who didn’t attend the funerals assembled at the cemetery to pay their respects in the days that followed. I remember riding through the packed cemetery after the burial and the family had departed. This was big stuff in our small world.
I drive by the cemetery daily. My dad’s buried there. Our earliest remembrances are the strongest. I look over at Mr. Copas’ gravesite and remember the third grade. The world has changed, but the music lives on and on.

In 1960, after five years of recording with 4 Star (distributed via Decca Records), Patsy Cline signed directly to Decca Records and producer Owen Bradley. Bradley was already producing Patsy’s recordings, but was limited by 4 Star’s insistence on dominating the copyrights of the songs she was recording. Owen and Patsy immediately looked more broadly for material, and their first three song session under the new contract instantly produced gold in “I Fall To Pieces,” her first Country #1 and her first charting recording in almost three years.

The next year also produced her classic “Crazy,” which reached #2, and “She’s Got You,” her second #1, and Patsy Cline’s star has shown brightly ever since. All she needed was the right material, and Owen Bradley and Decca provided it. Unfortunately, that illustrious combination only was to last until Patsy died in a plane crash at age 30 in March 1963. By then, she had recorded the 51 masters on this new collection, and these 51 tracks have become the crown jewels in this country Queen’s recorded legacy. From standards to country classics, from Cole Porter and Irving Berlin to Willie Nelson and Hank Williams, the songs, Bradley’s full-bodied productions, and Patsy’s performances shine throughout.

The great remastered music is elaborated on by a series of remarkable period photos and insightful liner notes by Colin Escott.

A stone monument, located 2.8 miles north of Camden on Mt. Carmel Rd stands in their honor. A new walkway project has just been completed at the site. JD: I was working in Washington when she was fooling around down there, and she used to come to the joints where I played and would sing. I heard her and always thought she was a great singer, and she was indeed.

SG: So you knew right off the bat that she was destined for something pretty special?

JD: I thought she was, yeah. She was a good-looking girl, well-proportioned and sung her butt off.

Formal Induction Will Take Place Later This Year
February 23, 2010

Jimmy Dean, Ferlin Husky, Billy Sherrill and Don Williams will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame during a formal ceremony later this year. The prestigious announcement was made Tuesday morning (Feb. 23) by the Country Music Association.

Due to a tie in voting, both Dean and Husky will be inducted in the veteran era artists category. An artist becomes eligible in that category 45 years after first achieving national prominence. Sherrill will join in the non-performer category, presented every three years in rotation with the recording and/or touring musician and songwriter categories. Williams will be inducted in the modern era artist category. An artist becomes eligible in that category 20 years after first achieving national prominence. Their inductions will raise membership in the Country Music Hall of Fame from 108 to 112.

In addition to his status as a recording artist, Dean was a television pioneer who brought country music to a national audience. Born Aug. 10, 1928, in Olton, Texas, he was playing piano, harmonica and accordion by the time he was a teenager. Dropping out of high school at age 16, he served in the Merchant Marines and U.S. Air Force. Stationed in Washington, D.C., he began performing at area clubs. Signed to Four Star Records, Dean's debut single, "Bummin' Around," reached No. 5 on Billboard's country chart in 1953. The success led broadcaster Connie B. Gay to offer him the opportunity to host Town and Country Time, a three-hour television show that aired Saturday nights in Washington, D.C. In 1957, he moved to New York, signed with Columbia Records and hosted The Morning Show, an early morning television variety show for CBS. In 1961, Dean wrote and recorded his signature song, "Big Bad John," in Nashville. The song reached No. 1 on Billboard's pop and country charts and earned him a Grammy for best country & western recording. He topped the chart again in 1965 with "The First Thing Ev'ry Morning (And the Last Thing Ev'ry Night)" and scored five more Top 10 hits during his tenures on Columbia, RCA Victor and Casino Records. With his success during the early '60s, Dean became the first guest host of The Tonight Show. From 1963-1966 on ABC, The Jimmy Dean Show introduced mainstream America to artists such as George Jones, Roger Miller, Buck Owens and Charlie Rich. He headlined concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall and the London Palladium and was the first country performer to play the Las Vegas strip. During the late '60s, Dean expanded his business interests after buying a Texas hog farm and transforming it into the Jimmy Dean Meat Company. He sold the company to Sara Lee Corporation in 1984 and continued to be the company's spokesperson and chairman of the board for nearly 20 years.

Husky was born Dec. 3, 1925, in Cantwell, Mo., and raised on a farm where he learned to play guitar as a child. After serving in the Merchant Marines, U.S. Army and Coast Guard, he moved to California in 1949. He gained small roles as an actor in several Western movies before becoming a disc jockey in Bakersfield, Calif., and performing in the area. He signed with Four Star Records in 1950 but found little success on the label. He was later signed to Capitol Records by A&R executive Cliffie Stone, a performer, artist manager and Los Angeles TV personality. Working with producer Ken Nelson, Husky released his first Capitol singles under the assumed name of Terry Preston. The singles were not successful, either, and he reverted to using his birth name around the time he moved to Springfield, Mo., where he often performed on the Ozark Jubilee. In 1952, he moved to Nashville and soon found himself recording a recitation for Jean Shepard's single, "A Dear John Letter," which eventually reached No. 1 on Billboard's country chart. As a solo artist, Husky's first chart success came in 1955 with "I Feel Better All Over (More Than Anywhere's Else)," which peaked at No. 4. He also charted singles under the name of his comic alter-ego, Simon Crum, but Husky is best known for his dramatic performance of "Gone" (which spent 10 weeks at No. 1 in 1957) and the inspirational "Wings of a Dove" (which spent 10 weeks at No. 1 in 1960). In all, Husky enjoyed 11 Top 10 hits during his career at Capitol. As a country star, he appeared in several films, including Country Music Holiday, Country Music on Broadway, The Las Vegas Hillbillys and Hillbillys in a Haunted House. In 1960, he became one of the first country artists inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Sherrill was born Nov. 5, 1936, in Phil Campbell, Ala., the son of an evangelist preacher. Playing saxophone and working in his own band, he drew upon rock 'n' roll and R&B influences in his songwriting. He joined Epic Records' Nashville operation in 1964 as an in-house producer, recording artists the label's other producers declined. Inspired by Phil Spector's famous "wall of sound" production technique, with string sections and background harmonies, his extensive credits as both a producer and songwriter include David Houston's "Almost Persuaded," Charlie Rich's "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" and Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man." (Sherrill discovered Wynette when she was a hairdresser who arrived at his office unexpectedly and asked for an audition.) He also produced some of George Jones' most significant hits, including "The Grand Tour" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today," as well as Tanya Tucker's "Delta Dawn" and Johnny Paycheck's "She's All I Got." He signed Barbara Mandrell to her first record deal in 1968 and worked with artists such as Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, David Allan Coe, Elvis Costello, Janie Fricke, Shelby Lynne, Marty Robbins and Johnny Rodriguez. He left the label in 1985 and mostly retired from the music business in the '90s.

Williams, born May 27, 1939, in Floydada, Texas, lent his rich baritone to a long string of country hits between 1974 through 1991. He played in a variety of bands as a teenager and charted pop singles in the '60s as a member of the Pozo-Seco Singers. He moved to Nashville when the group disbanded to work as a songwriter for Jack Clement's publishing company. Williams charted five Top 40 country singles for JMI Records before moving to Dot (later ABC/Dot). His first release, "I Wouldn't Want to Live If You Didn't Love Me," topped the chart in 1974. His 17 No. 1 hits include "You're My Best Friend," "(Turn Out the Light and) Love Me Tonight," "Till the Rivers All Run Dry," "Say It Again," "Some Broken Hearts Never Mend" and "I'm Just a Country Boy." In 1978, he won the CMA Award for male vocalist and released one of his most enduring hits, "Tulsa Time." His hits continued on MCA Records: "It Must Be Love," "Love Me Over Again," "I Believe in You," "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good," "If Hollywood Don't Need You," "Love Is on a Roll," "Stay Young" and "That's the Thing About Love." He earned his final No. 1 hit, "Heartbeat in the Darkness," on Capitol in 1986 and his last Top 10 hit with "Lord Have Mercy on a Country Boy" on RCA in 1991. Known as the "Gentle Giant," he retired from touring in 2006. He and his wife, Joy, will celebrate 50 years of marriage on April 10.

2010 Marks the Fiftieth Anniversary of Patsy Cline’s
Grand Ole Opry Induction Which Happened at Nashville’s
Historic Ryman Auditorium.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (February 18, 2010) –Bio-musical Always...Patsy Cline returns to the historic Ryman Auditorium on June 18, 2010. Always…Patsy Cline will be performed on the same stage where Cline was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1960. 2010 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Cline’s induction into the Grand Ole Opry. Her history with the Nashville landmark runs deep – Cline was introduced by Ernest Tubb the first time she made an Opry appearance in July of 1955. She famously received three encores after a performance of “Crazy” in 1961 on the Ryman stage. Famed WSM announcer Eddie Stubbs has commented that Cline had “...one of the most special voices that ever appeared on this stage.”

Songstress Mandy Barnett will reprise her role for the sixth time as the famous singer. Joining Barnett on stage to reprise her role of Louise Seger, Cline’s most devoted fan, will be Tere Myers. Always...Patsy Cline creator and original director, Ted Swindley, will return to direct. The musical was originally produced at the Ryman in 1994 following an $8.5M renovation by Gaylord Entertainment Company.

In 1961 Cline and Seger met before a show Cline performed in Houston, Texas. Always...Patsy Cline is based on the story of the friendship that developed between them. The two women corresponded until Patsy’s sudden death at age 30 in an airplane crash on March 5, 1963. The show takes its name from Patsy’s sign off on her letters to Louise. Each correspondence ended the same way: “Always ... Patsy Cline.”

Always...Patsy Cline features more than 20 of Cline’s most memorable numbers including “I Fall to Pieces,” “Crazy,” “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” and “Sweet Dreams,” which became a hit shortly after her death.

Always…Patsy Cline will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 18 through July 29 with the exception of July 4. Tickets go on sale Saturday, February 20 and will be available at the Ryman box office, daily 9 am to 4 pm, or through getgaylordtickets.com. Ticket prices are $29.50 & $36.50.

Patsy Cline Boulevard coming to Music Row?

Patsy Cline Boulevard... that's the proposed name for the Music Row street that is now Music Square East, between Grand Avenue and Buddy Killen Circle.

The city's planning commission has approved the name change, and on January 19, an ordinance will go up for its first city council reading (it takes three readings to earn full and official approval).

Cline, of course, is one of Nashville's most celebrated singers. She recorded here with producer Owen Bradley, scoring hits including "Crazy" and "She's Got You."

But why are no Nashville city streets named for newspaper reporters? The people would like to know.

These lyrics speak to the heart and soothe the soul, but only but only one song was crowned the winner on "Good Morning America."

Thousands of people logged on voted, and this morning Robin Roberts announced that George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today" won.

"Crazy" by Patsy Cline was a close second, getting 18 percent of the vote, and Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" came in third.
